Does anyone know what this hole is for ? It’s leaking some gear oil and is also threaded for a 1/4 bolt.
Thanks Last edited by 1949mercury; 04-28-2018 at 10:49 PM. |

That hole is for the bolt that secures the hold down bracket for the O/D cable to the transmission. You are missing the bracket and the cable.

It's a formed loop clamp.

The O/D cable bracket on both of my 49 trans is a “U” shaped bracket about 1 1/2” long with a hole in the middle. One of the bracket’s legs has a tit on it that fits into a notch in the housing. I have photos of it on my iPhone and can send them to you. Text me with your cell# or email address and I’ll forward them.

I looked in my manual and my box of bolts and I think I found it.

Glad I scrolled all the way to the bottom of the page, I was just about to grab my camera and crawl under my car. Not that I don't need to crawl under it still, I just don't need to bother with the camera.
