I need some engine compartment measurements.I have an FE Ford with an early 2x4 Edelbrock intake manifold. Carter AFB carbs. I do not have the hood or fenders on yet but I am trying to figure out what to run for air cleaners. Things look tight especially for the front carb. To get an idea how much room I have to play with if anyone has any idea how much space is between the hood and the water tank that would help. Has anyone else gone through this and if so what did you use for filters. There's nothing like sticking a carb. stud through a freshly painted hood. Manifold is a Edelbrock F-262 and carbs. are early Carter AFB 4 1/4 air horn.

![]() Here is an EDELBROCK TECH PAGE- http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive/...mensions.shtml The 61 FORD 390CI/401HP did come through with a 3 X 2 setup ( HOLLEY 2300's) (dealer install) so the actual height of the EDEL carb pad(s) and CARTERS will be a factor. The EDEL surge tank mounting height should be @ or about @ the OEM intake mounting height. If you put strips of modeling clay on the top of the surge tank, it will give you an idea of hood closure. I would remove the hood latch so as not to have the hood close completely while ciphering. If tying to measure carb clearance, put vacuum caps on the carb studs to prevent any dimpling to the hood panel while ciphering. Don't forget and allow for torque twist and lift of the engine. Do you see an EDEL PN cast onto the intake? If all else fails, CRITES makes a beautiful fiberglass bubble hood (aka 64 THUNDERBOLT/LIGHWEIGHT 64 427HR GALAXIE)...

I went a little different direction.I am running a 427 low riser 2x4 intake,AFB carbs. and stock style intake. I made some 1/4 inch thick spacers for the carbs. I used clay to check hood to air cleaner distance. Good clearance except for the front of air cleaner to center hood brace. Not much more than 1/4". I measure from the intake near the dist hold down to the top of air cleaner and it is about 9 3/4". Is there any chance someone out there running the oval air cleaner on 3x2 or 2x4's can check the overall height on one? Manifold to air cleaner lid top....

The only thing I can think of is modify the hood brace or put a bubble hood on it. I hate to recommend other sites, but you should have a better chance of finding help here - http://www.network54.com/Forum/74182 That doesn't mean you can't come back here ans show it when finished...

DAMN THAT THING IS PRETTY! I had a buddy that had a black one with FORD 8V (LR) and the hood shut on it. It has to be the EDEL intake carb pad height being higher.

HOLD ON! There were two elements available for the 3 X 2 and 4 X 2.
One was 2" H and the other 1.81" H. Will the shorter element get you out of trouble? - http://www.network54.com/Forum/74182...ilter+problems

This is the Ford low riser intake on the car now with genuine Carter AFB's. The hood does shut, just a little tight at the center brace area. I checked the element with a caliper and it measures just shy of 1 3/4". Normal driving it will probably be okay. There just isn't much room for error if it ever broke a motor mount. I was hoping someone else out there was running a bone stock set-up and noticed how much clearance they have.....

If you don't trust it, maybe consider a torque tie-down on the left side.
