How well does a steering mount plate from a newer ford fit in a 35 car. I would like to update the steering box in my 35 and would like to know how much work is involved. I have a plate out of a 1940 ford and steering box but it’s hard to tell if it will fit. I know I will have to drill out the rivets that holds the old plate in but will the new plate fit in without drilling new holes. And will the new plate require bending to fit in the 35 frame channel. thanks

37-39 is a perfect fit as far as holes and rivets are concerned and work fine in a 35-36 frame.

What about 1940 plate fitting in a 1935 car?

Coupe35-

"37-'40 plates are a perfect fit in '35-'36 frames. No modifications of any sort are required. Where you need to do some changes is with the floor opening in the floorboard, moving the column drop and a 3/4" relocation of the locking collar on the steering shaft. The reason these minor changes are needed is the '35-'40 steering plate actually has the the gear assembly somewhat lower and at a slightly different angle than the '35-'36 steering gear. Still, these are only minor adjustments that will leave you with a greatly improved steering.

I do not quite understand what you are saying. Are you saying that a spacer will have to go between the column and the dash to make up the difference in height and what is the locking collar. If I have to lower the column or cut the floor board, it I might have to live with the hard steering.

I run a 37-39 steering box in my 35. I use the original 35 bracket. Two holes line up, one merely needs to drill the third hole. This works very well. Admittedly, this car is built RHD, however I imagine it is just the mirror image for left hook. A most worthwhile modification, you'll certainly notice the difference. Brian

On my 35 w 37 bracket
I moved it back a bit so the Fenton on that side fit better.
Im sure it’s a non issue if your not doing headers.

I did the same thing on my 36 pickup and it is left hand drive.

if you want to keep the light switch on the steering wheel. you may have a proulbem with the 40 box i don,t think the horn rod fits the narrow hole in the 40 shaft .i may be wrong i am sure some one on this site will know. if not try the horn rod on the 40 box . the 39 box is no proulbem if your going to use your 35-36 colum you have to relocate the locking sleve on the steering shaft. in any event the mod is worth the efort you will be pleased with the ez of steering
