'41 fuel tank:steel or plastic?
I'm changing out the gas tank on my '41 tudor which won't be driven very often.Would it be a better idea to use plastic? Are there any drawbacks other it not being original looking even tho it'll be a driver? --Bill

Re: '41 fuel tank:steel or plastic?
i may be wrong but one drawback using a repro tanks plastic or metal have 5 hole sending unit mounting and the original ones have 6 holes, and original gauges require the 6 hole sending units to work properly, there maybe an adaptor available but im not sure .

Re: '41 fuel tank:steel or plastic?
If you're running dual exhaust you will find that the exhaust system fits a little closer to the plastic tank, which is larger and holds more than the stock tank. Also on the plastic tank the gas tank line does not exit from the bottom of the tank like the stock tank does. I put a plastic tank in my 40 Ford. An adapter is available to mount the stock gas sending unit.
Also there is no drain on the plastic tank. |

Re: '41 fuel tank:steel or plastic?
Hi,
remember to ground the sendng unit if you go for a plastic tank. Plastic won,t conduct current. While you are at it, ground your tail lights stop lights, etc.. Also your headlights and everything elect.. I am in the slow process of restoring a 41 convert. And i think 41,s are one of the hardest cars to restore. If you need parts or help, e mail me. Re: '41 fuel tank:steel or plastic?
Al,thanks for the help offer! I've got her on the road now with a steel tank. A few more things-to-do: get the duels on,replace the speedometer cable that broke coming home the other night, long rear shackles and stabilizing bar, reinstall the original radio, plus a lot more to do! But,It does look good with bubble skirts and drive good. One of my friends is restoring a '41 conv. but with 350 and custom dash etc. Each to his own! That's where my radio came from! If you need parts let me know,he may have some not needed that you can use. Thanks again--Bill Stocks
