The reason I do not use vinegar in the engine is because even if you flush that out with baking soda, there can still be enough left to eat at the block, and it WILL continue to chew on the iron. Remember to save the initial release of the evapo-rust as it can be used over and over again. There have been plenty of discussions and pictures of items used to do this. The last time I had the head off, I even went so far as to use a bore brush to sweep out the rear areas around #3 and #4 cylinders and use a magnet to pull out the crud. That proved worthwhile netting me a lot more rust flakes than I would have imagined.
