Re: 21 stud main bearing help and questions
A little suprised no one mentioned you are missing a piece of pipe on the cap...
The idee is to get the oilreturn below the oillevel of the engine to prevent blowby going out the rear mainseal. Looks like you have a mix of a single and double singer seals. |

Re: 21 stud main bearing help and questions
I know about the drain pipe, ford canceled that in early 35 due ti the crank case ventilation system. Question is does this particular main cap have a lower seal or not? If my engine is a late 36/early 37...maybe there is no seal. Is there a seal for this cap or not? Ready to install the pan but need a definite answer. Again...there was no drain pipe from 37-41. None from 41-48. Does my main cap fit a slinger seal or not? Maybe my 37 is an earlier model where a lower slinger seal didn't exist like the 36. Guess I have an early 37...36 had no seal at the main cap. I'll put it back together the way it was.

Re: 21 stud main bearing help and questions
Your rear cap certainly resembles the type found on a 36 engine. Every 37 engine I've seen has the insert that you picture elsewhere. Thing is with these old Fords, nothing is ever totally black and white....it would appear that at least one [yours] 37 engine was produced with the earlier style rear cap. No worries, use it as is in conjunction with the inserted upper die cast piece in t5he block. It'll work....and, you don't need the oil return pipe the above poster alludes to. That item was discontinued in 1935.

Mate, you're a faster typist than me! My answer is the definitive answer you seek, and you are correct! Bolt it up and run it! Good luck, Brian

Re: 21 stud main bearing help and questions
Drain pipe ended in early 35. Crankcase ventilation ended the need for a drain back pipe off the main cap. Also due to a better oil pump aswell. The question is does my main cap fit a lower seal or is it a 36 cap where it didn't exist yet? 37 was the 1st year for the lower seal. Maybe I have an early 37? Late 36? Does someone have a pic of a 37 main cap I can compare mine to?

Re: 21 stud main bearing help and questions
The answer is your cap is the same style as in a 36 which does not have a separate insert as does a 'normal' 37 cap.
