Gemmer 2 tooth
Hi All!
I am thinking of restoring my own Gemmer 2 tooth steering box. I have a mechanical aptitude and can do a lot of things. My question is is this project do-able for the average bear or should I take it to someone who has done it before and pay them to do it? I figure that way it is done right the first time if someone with experience does it. Your thoughts are appreciated. |

Re: Gemmer 2 tooth
I've rebuilt two of them using Les Andrews' book as my guide. The results are quite satisfactory. It is more difficult doing a RHD box than a LHD one with his instructions his instructions are plain WRONG in places. I had to make allowances for the usual ignorance of RHD.
If I can do it with that handicap, I'm sure you can.

I suggest you read his section about the steering box, then decide but remember, it is always easier to understand what is going on when you have the parts in front of you.

Re: Gemmer 2 tooth
It's a pretty easy job. Getting the lower race out is the hardest part. Be sure to adjust it all before you install it in the car; it's much easier on the bench. Special tools are required to replace the worm gear on the steering shaft.
