My dad told me to to always carry a foot square of 3/4 plywood in the car to place under the jack. He said once he had a flat in his 1974 VW Ghia and it had the ol bumper pole jack. Said he loosened the lugs, jacked up the car and by the time he went to put the spare on it wouldnt go, the jack had sunk into the hot asphalt a few inches so he had to quickly jack it up as it was sinking and put the spare on. He said he never did get the base out of the asphalt it sank so deep...
