Burping a dual temp gauge '34 Ford King Seeley Gauge
I just replaced the temp portion of my '34 dual temp gauge. The gauge reads high now. What is the best way to burp the bubbles out of the capillary tube ? It read accurately before the switch.
Thank you- Dennis |

Re: Burping a dual temp gauge '34 Ford King Seeley Gauge
Dennis,
Those units are difficult to deal with if stored incorrectly. Night and day heat cycles or whatever, air bubbles become entrapped within the tube. I have used several methods in trying to correct them, including the following: Suspend vertically from a source of constant vibration: Ineffective. Repeated heat/cool cycles in boiling/cold water: Partial, some improvement. Attach longitudinally to a pole, and rotate that pole rapidly from the gauge end: This worked for me after using the heat/cool method. Perhaps one method alone is not sufficient, but combining methods, all the while keeping the glass bulb high, may work for you. Remember also, the glass bulb has an etched calibration line to indicate correct adjustment on the gauge face, assuming no bubbles within.

I just hang it with the probe down and use a pot of boiling and a pot of ice water . Dip it in boiling water until the red is to the hot line and then dip it in the ice water until the red is gone from sight . Usually only takes a couple cycles . This of course not work if the gauge has other issues .

All the above are very good answers. The other option is if its in the car now, then just drive the car as normal. With the heating and cooling of the engine, road vibrations, braking forces, etc then in time it may come good of its own accord. Worth a try. Regards, Kevin.

Re: Burping a dual temp gauge '34 Ford King Seeley Gauge
A very interesting thread as I'm also in the process of trying to 'set-up' a dual temp/fuel gauge head. I appear to be missing the wire that calibrated the fuel gauge head, is there anything I can do to replace or remedy this? I have an original single fuel gauge unit with the old calibrating wire still present, can I just transfer this over to the dual temp/fuel gauge or were they vert specific to individual units and their particular set-up?

I would just fit up your dual gauge as is and try it out for a while as to how accurate it is. It may not need a calibrating rod. You can always fit it in later in the car. Regards, Kevin.

I am using a fuel gauge without a calibrating rod now and have no problems, seems very accurate.
