Who sells a compression tester that fits a Model A
I have an old compression tester with a rubber cone on the end, but it seems to no longer work.
I went to a couple of auto parts stores and they don't sell the rubber cone type, but they sell the type that will thread into a conventional spark plug hole. Has anyone purchased a compression tester recently that will fit a Model A spark plug hole? If so, where did you purchase it? Thanks, Neil |

You might end up buying an adapter for the Model A spark plug to a modern plug and then use the current tester. I don't know if any of the suppliers will sell them individually or they will try to sell you a set.

Brattons will sell you a single plug adapter, that is what I use.

I used an old 3X spark plug base and found an adapter. Removed the rubber cone. Works great!

Using one of the adapters you may find your old tester will work.

Re: Who sells a compression tester that fits a Model A
I purchased a standard compression tool from Advance Auto Parts down the road and added the adapter from Bratton's as mentioned above:
https://www.brattons.com/compression-tester.html Works well together and I was able to do compression testing on my car this afternoon without any issues. |

Re: Who sells a compression tester that fits a Model A
I have a Diesel compression tester that has only been used 1 time. I always forget to see if one of the adapters will fit a Model A. NOW, I don't know WHERE it's hiding. (It's NOT in the kitchen JUNK drawer, either.)

You can use one of these things. And if your old compression tester is not working, HF sells testers at a reasonable price and theirs will screw into the adapter. It works great.

Re: Who sells a compression tester that fits a Model A
Thank you everyone. I will call a Model A parts store tomorrow and buy the adapter.
I'll get a compression tester at a local auto parts store. I did get my compressor to work, but my stupidity cause me to break it permanently. Originally I had pushed it down in the number 1 spark plug hole and tried to crank the motor over with the crank to get a reading. The crank kept slipping (must be a bad crank nut) and I could not get a reading, so I thought the compression tester must be broken. After I posted, I went back and decided to turn the motor over using the starter to see if I could get a reading. The tester went airborne, hit the hood and then fell to the ground and broke. They say, with age, comes wisdom. Obviously not so for me. |

Re: Who sells a compression tester that fits a Model A
Don't know what size the A plug body is, but I needed an 18 mm flathead adapter, so broke the porcelain out of an old plug and ran a 14 mm X 1.25 tap down it and screwed the tester in.

I think I have you beat in the stupidity area. This is not Model A, but it still is stupid. I was working with my John Deere tractor mower the other day and I took the pin out of the little wheels that hold the mower off the ground. Well, did not put the pin back in, wheel fell off, mower was running, thus now have a ground up wheel! By the way, I mentioned above that I purchased a HF tester awhile back and have had very good luck with it. But it is HF, may not be that accurate but for me, when a person only does it every now and then, it works. Don't let me talk you out of your brand tester I just wanted to let you know my luck with HF.

Re: Who sells a compression tester that fits a Model A
With a compression tester you will find a bad clylinder quickly. Then you will need to find where the bad clylinder is leaking. A clylinder differential tester will tell you a bad clylinder and if bad rings, intake valve, exhaust valve, cracked head, bad gasket. It does require an air compressor and a little more time to set up. Do local auto parts store loan out clylinder differential testers?

Re: Who sells a compression tester that fits a Model A
You can easily make your own cylinder leak down tester....
Hollow out a spark plug or use a 3x plug base. Then braze an air line nipple onto it. Use a regulator to control the amount of air... There will be no gauges to show any percentages but one can easily figure out the problem |
