Heres a thought, and no doubt some of you will reprimand me for cheaping out on brake parts again.

But since the brake hose from master cylinder to junction block (on the 52 Merc) is not available through Napa, why not take an ordinary length of steel brake line and form it into a loop for flexibility and just use that to replace the old rubber hose? I've seen that method as factory equipment on newer vehicles and it seems fine. And at about one tenth the cost of the rubber brake line, I like the price.

That should work, Ralph. It should only have to cope with the flex between the body and the frame which should be next to nothing. Like you say, just put a loop in to make it more forgiving.

I understand the type of driving you tend to do. To be honest the solid line should be good enough for any usage. It may have used a rubber hose for noise supression more than anything, you never know.

I'll admit its rusty but I feel the body is still attached quite firmly to the frame and there should be little if any movement.

Kind'a looks like it had a steel line with a loop to begin with. I can't imagine why Ford would use a flex line in that application originally. DD

As far as I know this rubber brake line is all original equipment. 52 was Ford's first year for firewall mounted brakes and swing pedals so maybe they tended to over build the system. For that matter why use the banjo fitting on the master outlet?

Boy, ya learn somethin' every day. I wonder why they did that? Seems like I've seen original PB cars with Treadlevac units. The one in the pic I've shown looks to be non-PB. DD

I have never seen a 52-53 with power brakes but maybe there is a Canadian-U.S difference there too. I have a photo of a 53 Monarch from here in Sask. and it shows the same flexible rubber line from the master cylinder to junction block as I have on the 52 Merc.

My 57 T-Bird had a rubber hose from either the master cylinder to the servo or the servo to the union. (Long time ago) When I rebuilt the car I eliminated the servo and the rubber hose and went straight from the master cylinder to the union with a steel line.

That was (gulp) over 30 years ago. I still have the car.

If you have a good parts guy who can read a paper catalog, he could come up with a substitute line once he knows the length, fitting sizes, etc... .

The steel line looped would probably not be a problem, BUT, how do you intend on adapting it to the master cylinder and junction block? The rubber hose uses copper washers to seal.

The copper washers will be no problem as I will retain the banjo fitting on the master cylinder. The new steel line will thread into the banjo fitting block just like the original rubber line did.

Thanks for posting that parts book view of the hose and etc. It comes in handy when working on it. Initially I thought the banjo fitting and hose were a solid unit but eventually, with penetrating oil and patience, the banjo fitting unthreaded from the rubber line.

Seems odd Ford would not use a flexible (hose) connection if they didn't expect some movement. That hose setup with the banjo fitting seems like a lot of extra expense if it wasn't required. Would be interesting to know what the original thinking to justify a more expensive approach to solving a seemingly simple problem was.

Not to hijack the thread but would 52 or later brake pedal with MC easily be adapted to a 49 Ford?
