Had the same problem on my 39 coupe.
Body man fixed it in about 4 hours.

Forming "Free Hand" is a lot like any other type of art. It's all by eye & sometimes repetition. You were fortunate to still have a fair bit of the inner structure to indicate the shape there to some extent. I can tell it still ain't easy. A person would likely need a buck to form a section the size you might have needed if you didn't have something to point you in the right direction. A person would need an original part to pattern the buck or bucks after so that complicates things a lot. It's too bad they don't supply inner and outer skins for the 39 & 40 coupe lids but even if someone does, they might be pricey these days.

You are well on the way and it's looks like you are doing good to me. Keep it up. We don't get a lot of build contributions on this site like the HAMB does and it is very welcome.

Test fit on the body, the lid is in epoxy primer behind the doors in the 2nd picture.

As you can tell in the pictures I have A LOT of lighting! These old eyes need it, got each light for $10 (w/o bulbs) found on craigslist! It makes a huge difference!

Thanks Art! (Art is a great guy who's been into old fords for a very long time, he sold me the sedan which w/o, this build would never have been possible... we both made great use of the sedan, or what was left of it...)

Hi Chris. I thought you would work all night putting that engine in. lol It's 5 degrees above here with wind making it 15* below nothing. When you come down next time we'll go over to Pat's and see his 40. Walt

update: The deck lid came out pretty good.. I found another set of front fenders about 30 minutes away ( I discovered I had originally bought PU fenders some time ago), these are not bad, but they had the usual cracks, and some light running board area damage. The rear fenders I found pretty cheap at Hershey last fall, not bad, not good; they had the usual damage too, cracked wheel openings, rust-out around the bottom, dents in the back, running board damage etc.. The front radiator pans needed fixing etc. etc. ( I think I have earlier running boards, the front holes don't match up...)
I put it all together for the first time, what a pain in the arse! ..especially alone, unless you got 4 ft long arms, and 4 of 'em to boot. I would bet when a body man of the era saw a '40 come in he charged double!
Well here are some pics, the plan is to smooth out the last little things, filler primer, sand, filler primer, sand, take it all apart, seal, color (folkstone gray), put it back together..WITH HELP!
Hey it's never going to be an low mileage original or a show winner... it will always be a tramp... but I think it's damn kewl so far !

Just for info I saw a new Subaru yesterday sporting a color that looks identical to Folkstone Gray. Might be something to look at when you are ready to paint.

I'll take a few pictures of the repaired fenders, from the inside of course (I'm not so anal as to finish the insides! :-) )

The finished deck lid:

Great work. A vast improvement over what you had. That's the key to any sort of metal work, unless your name is Ron Covell, just break each shape down into smaller easier to manage shapes and weld 'em all together.

I speak as a complete hack on the subject. My metalshaping skills are deplorable.

Mart.

And thank you for the kind words... :-)
