Default Re: best cure for vertical play on rear axle ?

I think you are more on track with your tag line of the thread, imo that is too much play. I looked in the mechanics handbook but it doesn't give a max spec on wear in that area. Tom Endy wrote some great articles with lots of pics at http://www.santaanitaas.org/technica...tech-articles/
Lots of info about rebuilding the rear end and related parts and brakes.
Hope this lead helps.

Looking for the front bumper emblem that has "Ford, Made In Canada"

Does anybody else think this description is nonsense?

It is not really as complicated as you seem to think it is. Mike

I believe it's resolved now. I was driving 30miles last weekend with rear brakes heating up to:
- 90°F with moderate to no braking, and
- 140°F with considerable braking, driving in town

A change of the bearing kit did not really help: http://www.macsautoparts.com/ford_model_a/model-a-ford-rear-wheel-hub-race-repair-kit.html
The play between axle stub and bearing remained as before.

The heating disappeared when adjusting the brake shoes under load, basically putting the car on the wheels. The play in the oval axle stub remained, but the brake shoes are adjusted better to the situation. Attached some pictures of the rolls build for this purpose. The rolls are from a heavy load ropebelt conveyor.

I may repair the axle stubs later. However, when thinking about the hassle just to remove the rear axle, and the rear spring... I may wait until a rear axle in good shape will cross my way. This may take some years, as Ford A is not that popular in Europe.
