My C59A is fully rebuilt, Bubba crab, rebuilt 94, NGK B6L plugs that are sooty. Tried Champion H10Ls, same thing. Being that there is no mixture adjustment, do I have to resort to changing jets? Carb has 51 mains, PV unknown. Or will hotter plugs do the trick? When the crab arrived from Bubba, it was set to maximum advance, but doesn't like that so much, so I pulled it back a couple of clicks. Does anyone else have that same situation? Just seems strange to be running maximum advance. BTW, Bubba's rebuild on the crab is stunning, I'm not criticising, just curious.
Yep we had the glass bead problem on a few units , had tons of them to do and my part time guy did the bead lasting. Seems as if we left some beads in the vacuum brake adjusting screw. Our fix today is to take the adjuster screw out and totally clean inside and out then reassemble. Just another plus for us as we learned and it wont ever happen again.....

Now on your other problem with the crab advance , it should have been set in the exact middle of the advance screw adjustment. Maybe we missed one etc ???
Today i set up and run every crab and begin the test with the timing centered and then adjust the contacts to be perfect on a degree wheel and distributor machine...
Thats what the purple nail polish means on our units .When its perfect i paint a small mark on that section etc..

Note : In your case i would really like to see the distributor and re set it up on a machine. Send it back for a no charge total service etc ....would make a good post on the problem etc..

Just for the record i actually thought i really understood the operation of these early ford distributors after doing them for a few years. We started this operation at the Newport Hillclimb and fixed them for 32 years every year.
Last year Bubbas shipped 487 distributors to many happy customers .
Almost every week i have a meeting with my one day a week guy ( retired technician) and we learn something different every batch we did. Our trade in program on the crabs was almost 300 units. I didnt know as much as i thought i did regarding the point adjustment , point lube , paint and overall finish so therefore there are changes made every day almost to make it even better.

I will teach a class at the Early Ford V8 convention this year held in Springfield Illinois in August... Part of the class will cover total service and operation of the early Ford V8 distributors using tones of actual fixes and case studies .... Presently working on a book to handle these services as well. See some of you guys there ....

Me too ! Hopefully the hamb would be approx the same as this thread here. The majority has been very good with a few problems over time. AND even the problems are fixed as soon as possible.
I want problems to be 0% but that doesnt seem to happen handling the overall volume that we do.
I also own a fuel injector service business and try as we can, we have the same issues over there as well. Sometimes autoparts just dont behave the way we want them do. Shipped a few thousand fuel injectors last year and a few were problems .
Some days we spend more time trying to fix the problems and make sure it doesnt happen again as we do actually working on the rebuilds....

By the way i did get Dave Carters Desoto unit finished up yesterday and am working on John Gillmans Mallory today....so this thread has served some positive input and i welcome the comments good and bad......

Hows your special blown unit working ???

My blown flathead runs great! And the special condenser helped. Even though it's terrible cold here I fire the heat up in the garage and let the car get up to op temp and let it breath some..
Still a slight hesitation on take off but I believe that is from 2 primary carbs and not 1 primary and 1 secondary

Bubba... that's not necessary, it's running fine, and besides its an expensive operation sending it from NZ, but thanks for the offer. I've currently got it 1 notch advanced from centre mark and seems pretty good. I've also just installed some Autolite 216s and they sure do seem to run better than the B6ls and H10s I've had before.

The guy seems here to be a "stand up" guy, being really honest about how hard it is to heard all us cats into the same circle and I salute him.
My problem with his upgrade (at least to my knowledge) is I don't think I can hold my nose long enough to put a Chevy part, no matter how well disguised, under my hood!
Am I wrong in this thinkin?
Fire away, while I hold my hands over my head! Lol...slim

Ted you most certainly will, The unit I have that was rebuilt by Jim performs flawlessly, thats all I want is another unit the same, I think communication is key in any service industry, that combined with timely return of a job, these are my only two points of concern, both have been abysmal with both of the distributors, the end product is fine. I sent my unit before the crab deal was even on offer and that is part of my gripe, there needs to be a first in first out approach, I am a paying customer willing to pay, I have been on the back burner whilst others after me have been served and I have been given no communication or reason as to why. I am sure bringing it to a head will see a result.

I can vouch for Jim's integrity...a year or two back I recommended him to a friend og\f mine, to convert his Studebaker distributor to electronics, we couldn't get it to fire off, and I desoldered the ICM, took it to AZ to have it tested...module was fine, but noticed how they had the wiring, was different to how Jim's guys had done it...

I don't recall my buddies shortfall with Jim ($$), might have been shipping, or something, but I think he was 30-40 light in the $$'s, but after he emailed Jim and explained the issue with the wiring being wrong, Jim told him "we're square"...or words to that effect.

Yes, the Stude fires up nicely

Hey Jim,
You 'manning up' to this thread complaints, confirms my faith in you being a good business man and also a man with good ethics/integrity ! We all get snowed under with 'stuff' in life. In business, the pressure is tremendous to perform flawlessly. That hardly ever happens. We all realize that and appreciate your explanations and effort to make it right for those who feel and were offended. Thanks for being there when I've needed your services/product.

thanks, I've got a set on order from napa. $44 though

i have three YC units currently. all of them had a hard layer of white powder on the points....

when I was bench testing the distributor I filed a set up to check the rotor phase after I did what you said not to in one of your right ups... and the phase got knocked out of whack like you said it would lol... if only I had read that write up on the hamb the day BEFORE disassembly instead of the day after!!!

was a fun friday night project to get it back in the correct phase though

Guys i can tell you one thing for sure , i would like for this thread to just go away ,but thats business i guess....
As i said in another post life just goes on and things happen and it seems like the busier you get the more chance of things happening !!!!!
Just did some number crunching from 2013, we shipped 487 distributors out the door , most ( not all) were happy .
We receive boxes from all over every day and process each and every one, some have no notes other than i talked to Jim, others come from ebay that were purchased by someone to ship direct to us for repair.???
Each order is entered into a computer as they arrive and some ( get done the day we recieve them) while others are torn down with parts being sent to the machine shop down the street. (theres 38 working orders on the screen right now )
Actually had to fire my machine shop guy this year as my parts would lay there for weeks before he got to them. ( have new guy doing them now and seems much better)
So in respect to this thread , we will continue to do the best work possible and get them done as quickly as we can. However if you get caught in the cracks pm for status report and we will always respond...
Our goal is to be the very best Vintage ignition service available anywhere ....

Jim @ Bubbas

Well, for anyone who is wondering how things turned out for me, I did get my Mopar Mallory back just a couple weeks after posting on this thread. Of course, the work that I needed done to it, which Jim and I discussed numerous times over 27 months, wasn't done. I sent it there for shaft modification as it was originally made for a non-DeSoto hemi. I even sent the stock AutoLite out of the DeSoto for reference as to what needed done, which I still haven't received back yet. When I did receive the Mallory and test fit it into the DeSoto and saw the shaft was too long, I sent Jim a message about it. He told me that HotHemiHeads makes a kit for modifying the shaft...

I'm sure that Jim Linder and his fan club around here will just make a bunch of excuses and talk about what a stand up guy he is and all that, but quite frankly I've never been treated so poorly in my entire life by a company I was dealing with. And I must say the people who posted on this thread who said they respected him for saying he'd take care of it and for not bashing me and so on, I mean, wow, I just don't even know what to say about that. What reason would Jim Linder have to bash me? I've been very calm and reasonable about this, and explained several times that I feel Jim does great work and I didn't want to even post this but felt like I was out of options. If any of you want to find fault with me in all of this, I suppose there's nothing I can do about that, but I must say if you do I'd surely like to know what I did to bring this upon myself.

Well I still haven't received my Desoto Autolite. Also, in an 'explanation' of his side of the situation in the HAMB, Mr Linder claimed the reason he couldn't build my Mallory per our agreement was that it was of incorrect rotation. Turns out that isn't even true. I initially assumed that to be the case, but after a while I pulled the rebuilt Mallory out to identify to sell it since I couldn't use it. Since I don't have my Autolite to compare it directly, I can't verify this with a direct comparison, but according to what I could find, they are both the same.

I noticed after my last message all of those people saying what a stand up guy Jim was haven't responded. I'm curious as to why that is...
