Have re-read numerous MARC/MAFCA articles re: adjusting brakes. I believe all of these are referring to the later style “fixed” service brake cross shaft/adjustable brake rod set ups.
My January ’28 vehicle has the original ‘equalizer’ (multiple, floating pieces)/adjustable brake rod set up. My naïvety is showing ![]() Thanks!! |

Start by making 4 small wood blocks that will fit on each side of mounting hardware on the frame to hold the rods in the center of the travel. Next, adjust the rod between the brake pedal and floating system; adjust so shaft ends are vertical. Note: be sure you have installed the springs in the socket on both shafts; this keeps the shafts from moving in and out and also stops rattles. Next,tarting with the rear brake rods, pull the built in play out of the rods, then adjust the clevis so the pin will just slip into the cross shafts. Now, adjust the brake shoes in the rear drums; bolt up the brake rod return springs, this should complete the rear drums. Then move to the front brake rods and go thru the same process. When done properly this should give you 60 percent on the rear and 40 percent on the front. You may have to fine tune the rear brake shoes so the A does not pull one way or the other when you make an emergency stop. Remove the 4 wooden blocks. Please help, I am busy with this job, but I am not home and cant run down stairs to have a look. "be sure you have installed the springs in the bracket on both shafts" Which springs on which brackets? Regards Chris |

That would be the springs on the end of the cross shafts. The springs get hidden inside the ujoint housing. I'm missing the springs which is why I know what he is referring to.
