Default Removing the rear to get the tranny out

Nine hours and still cannot get the rear back in place. The springs tilt to the rear and and hit the u bolts.

The u bolts have opened up and the shackles won't fit.

The last time I had to remove the tranny I removed the engine. 10 hours start to finish. I'm working on 14 hours now and it still is not done.

Connect the u-joint then as you jack the rear end use a pry bar to work the spring into the channel. It'll go!

It'll go.Sometimes the dumbest little jobs turn into all day projects.I once changed the oil in a customers A,the plug boss spun.I took the pan off to weld it in,found six broken pan bolts.Looked up and saw some teeth missing off the timing gear. The oil change turned into quite a project.Pry the spring back while jacking, and squeeze the U-bolts back with a big pair of channel locks. It will all fall back into place. It's just your turn in the barrel.

Hey Mike,
I feel your pain !
I've done this job by myself, more than once and know exactly what you are saying/describing.
My advice for the condition of....'the springs tilt to the rear'....I make sure that in the beginning of this job, I make sure that the frame/body is UP HIGH enough that when I let the remove the shackle bolt nuts, that the spring/rear end(on FLOOR JACK) has enough room to come down and CLEAR the bolts. And, yeah the spring will want to 'angle back' just a enough to cause a problem. Then I loosen the front to enable bringing the rear out WITH spring attached. Now reverse process and attach front of torque tube OR at least engage drive shaft properly.
Then with rear end up on the floor jack...I push forward with both feet and jack rear up till spring is near its resting place/cross member. Now have a pretty good sized crow bar ready. Insert crowbar slightly into crossmember, and simultaneously jacking up rear end and PRYING spring forward. Feet on rear end pushing forward, floor jack lifting upward and crow bar prying top of spring forward using crossmember as leverage point.
Pretty darn easy,eh !
ONE CAVEAT: ensure that the front wheels of vehicle are blocked but good. Good luck

X3

I also grease the top of the top leaf. It'll help prevent squeaks and help the spring slip into place, both up into the channel, and left or right to let the bolt head slip into the pocket.

I normally don't let these things get to me but I wanted it for a show Sunday. I'll grab a son, and stay up during the day ( I work overnights and weekends) to see if I can "git 'er done" in time.

How about, install the spring first. Leave the u-bolts loose. Then use the spreader and bring the rear up for shackles connection.
