I think I'd leave it alone, but I have a few plates in similar shape that maybe i'll dunk it in EV and see what it does...

Tubman I do agree with the ER stuff. I've used it a bit and like it. Works well if you leave it in the sun (here in florida anyway). Just did a door lock that the tumblers were completely frozen. Soaking in penetrating fluid for a week did nothing. 3 days in 2 cups of EV and it works now. Just had it re-keyed and put it on my truck.

I have been where you are. My 41 was repainted and the plate I found was a little sad looking. I found a reasonable restorer and have never regretted my decision. If your interested PM me and I will be glad to provide contact info. He was able to quote the job from pictures and did it on time and for the quoted price.

"Restored plates" look too new and sometimes almost fake, as if they were reproduced..

Plain old white vinegar is the least expensive to take rust off. It takes a few days and will start to rust a soon as you rinse off with water so start the rest of your process as soon as it is dry. A 50% Aq. (water) solution works just about as well as full strength vinegar.

Vinegar, while it works well (i have used it several times for other purposes) is an acid and should not be used in a case such as this.

Go down to the store and get a little jar or can of Molasses mix it with water 3 water to 1 molasses in a tray enough to cover the plate leave it a few days check it, light rust a few days more for heavy rust. It will not hurt the paint most times it will brighten it up. Check it out on another plate first if your in doubt. You will have to de grease it soap and water or something it will not cut grease also. Bubba in Sour Lake Texas

Leave it as is. It looks good. Same with the rest of the wall art I'm going to hang on my garage wall (grill shell and front bumper) come to think of it, that would look awesome with grill shell, front bumper, the fronts to the old rotten fenders with the old rotten headlights we have in them wired up and working
I should have been an artist.....

I agree, keep it for display. another 35 plate is probably readily available. check ebay. after buying my 40 Ford, I found a 1940 Nebraska plate. I thought it would be cool to get a 1940 plate from each of the 48 states. turned out to be a lot harder & more expensive than I thought, but once I was into it I didn't want to quit halfway. I added Hawaii & D.C. since I found them at a good price. just finished my quest getting the last plate a few weeks ago. most paid-$195 for Mississippi, least-$4 for Connecticut. I am going to paint a map of the US on 4x8 plywood & mount the plates in their proper spots.
