I have a 1939-48 transmission main drive gear and second speed gear. The synchronizer teeth on both gears are worn/chipped.
Questions: 1) How does the worn/chip gear issue affect the operation of the transmission? 2) How bad can the wear/chip be before it affects the operation? Thanks |

Time to rebuild. If your syncros are worn your gonna start grinding a lot of gears shifting unless you become very adept at double clutching. One day you'll miss and bust the main drive gear or more.

At the cost of a good cluster gear (when you can find one) I wouldn't take a chance with marginal gears. These 2 gears are reasonably easy to find at a fair price. The 2nd gear synchro teeth on some gears may appear chipped when actually the teeth are slightly cut when the gear is made on a gear hob. Photos of the gears would help us Ford Barners in our analysis. Thanks Paul J. |
