I was reading a Bob Drake I think it was catalog and it stated the 6v works fine in a 12v system as long as you dont "get on it", I dont know what they call "get on it" and I didnt want to find out. I was also told that a 6v starter spins faster and that makes the bendix hit the flywheel ring gear teeth harder which was another reason I went 12v.
