Re: starter.. need a new one If you're anywhere near a large metro area, I would be looking for an automotive electrical shop that specializes in rebuilding them and have yours rebuilt.

Re: starter.. need a new one Marko: Save yourself a lot of money by reading and doing this:
https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showth...ng+starter+12v and https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showth...6v+starter+12v It's really not difficult to do and you get a nice feeling of accomplishment when done because you did it yourself and saved a ton of money. |
Re: starter.. need a new one Respectfully, to you gentleman suggesting he rebuild his own; not knowing his skill level nor what the problem is, your advice might not be helpful. I consider myself a pretty good amateur mechanic, and have replaced brushes, bushings and Bendix units. However, if I ran into a bad armature or field coil, I'd be lost. I've scanned the threads suggested, and when I got to the one that referenced the use of a lathe, I decided I would be in over my head. Marco, if you have access to the proper tools and the skill to do whatever needs to be done, by all means, have at it. Otherwise, a good automotive electrical shop is your best bet.

I agree. Just get a new 6v starter for $100 with free shipping. It'll work just fine on 12v. https://www.dbelectrical.com/product....html#app-list Jack E/NJ |
Re: starter.. need a new one I paid 115$ for a 12volt for my 226 G 6 cylinder.

You suggested a 6v starter to him. I was reading a Bob Drake I think it was catalog and it stated the 6v works fine in a 12v system as long as you dont "get on it", I dont know what they call "get on it" and I didnt want to find out. I was also told that a 6v starter spins faster and that makes the bendix hit the flywheel ring gear teeth harder which was another reason I went 12v. That may have been just something to sell me the 12v starter bit thats what I was told. |
Re: starter.. need a new one I'm in the just put in a 6 volt club.
Just my experience. Used a 6-volt for 12 years and about 50,000 miles. I was going to replace it with a 12 volt when it died. It never died! |
Re: starter.. need a new one I feel the best two options available are having yours rebuilt by a good shop - if you have one in your area. The second option? Napa. Understand there is a big difference between "rebuilt" and "remanufactured". Napa sells remanufactured units which is as good as it gets.

Re: starter.. need a new one I guess it depends on what Marko means by "the starter died". All the smoke leaked out? or did the spring break and it just spins?
First case needs rebuilt, but more common is the bendix needs a new spring. The last time I broke a spring I had mine rewired and the new contained bendix installed by my local rebuilder of all things electrical. |
