Default Ford Banjo Converted to what appears to be a PTO

I have the Banjo from and early Ford (say a 1938---to a late 40's) It was painted yellow and the gear cluster appears to be identical as my 41. THe question is does anyone have and idea what this may have been made for??

One side has a blank cover plate which supports and holds the bearing race for the ring gear bearing the opposite side has a very short shaft (say 3 inches) with a a u-joint in addition the axle cover is drilled and tap for a oil feed connection, The input to the Banjo has the same. I will put it back together and take some pics unless someone by chance know exactly what this is out of.
Have checked many many many web sites for pics of ford Banjo with no luck. Curoisity has gotten the best of me
