Default Fuel pump install help...

I just rec'd my new carter elect fuel pump(pictured).
The instructions say to disconnect the mechanical pump...hm, just got that online. So, do not want to get rid of that. This electric pump is a 'pusher' type.
My question is...can anyone explain / picture plumbing where I can use both pumps. And, does a pusher mean that the mechanical pump will NOT be able to draw fuel thru elect pump..when elect not activated??
