Fuel pump install help... 1 Attachment(s)
I just rec'd my new carter elect fuel pump(pictured).
The instructions say to disconnect the mechanical pump...hm, just got that online. So, do not want to get rid of that. This electric pump is a 'pusher' type. My question is...can anyone explain / picture plumbing where I can use both pumps. And, does a pusher mean that the mechanical pump will NOT be able to draw fuel thru elect pump..when elect not activated?? |
Re: Fuel pump install help... In my shoebox i installed a 6 volt inline elec. Carter fuel pump to prime her then turn it off and run off mechanical pump. The only problem is the mechanical pump can't pull fuel thur after 30 mph. The key is to create a by pass with a one way value... Do a search there a couple good post to help you on your way ...

Re: Fuel pump install help... I think I would get a different pump,I got mine from Airtek,can't remember the number,but ie works fine as a primer or runner,no problem with mechanical pump pulling thru it..

Re: Fuel pump install help... This hot weather is taking a toll on our flatheads! You can get a one way valve on ebay, I think they're for marine use. I just plumbed a bypass with 1/4 "T" compression fittings:

Ha,ha! While you are here posting this helpful pic and showing a solution to my question/problem, I'm on the 'search' area....viewing your input and the same picture You entered there. Ford minds run in the same road,eh! Thanks much for your effort/courtesy here! And, I'm using the same carter pump setup, only 12V! I think that I can do this setup, but wonder if running rubber gas quality line, in place of your metal bypass fabrication...will work? Mabe not fancy , but functional? I see in SEARCH area, that several guys state that this pusher pump...WILL... push gas thru the mechanical pump...is that possible and without damage to the mechanical pump?? |
Re: Fuel pump install help... As long as your mechanical pump doesn't have a bad diaphragm...then gas will run straight into the crankcase. But that'll help clean your sludge out!

Re: Fuel pump install help... 41Fordor, I like your bypass but was wondering about the Fuel filter; fuel would only be filtered when the boost pump runs? is there another fuel filter.

Re: Fuel pump install help... True, I should have plumbed it a little differently. But it's run fine without a filter, the metal bowl pump has a screen and sediment bowl. I pulled and flushed the tank after sitting for 30 years. And as often as I change my jets for tuning at high altitude, I can just clean out the carb bowl...

Re: Fuel pump install help... I'm running both Mechanical and electric pumps with no problems(now). The electric is near the gas tank, so it pushes fuel, and I installed a regulator right after the pump. Reg is set at 2 PSI.
I probably don't need the elec pump, now that the mech is rebuilt, but it was there when I bought the car, and it works. |
