Default 26 T engine temperature

Took my 26 roadster out the other day just for a very short drive. I had a little smoke (or I think vapor) coming from the radiator. The levels were fine before and after driving and it wasn’t overloaded either. I was worried that maybe the engine was running too hot. A friend recommended checking the engine temperature with an infrared gun. I got one off Amazon for 15$. I definitely have a radiator leak. When I check the top of the block with the gun it read 295degF. Are these guns accurate? I know that is way hotter than the engine should be. Any thoughts?
