Spur gear transmissions require the input shaft speed to match the selected gear speed to shift smoothly.The window for a smooth shift gets shorter with higher rpm.If you follow the instruction manual it does shift smoothly but feels like a lugging condition. Practice allows higher rpm shifting.Double clutching is necessary for smooth downshifts.The transmission is extremely robust and tolerates a fair amount of abuse.
