Shifting into second gear tough.

Can you slide into 2nd when the car is at idle ?This is a long shot and may not be a solution but not sure what gear lube you are using. The modern 600 is really SAE 140 and when warmed up may not be viscous enough to slow the gears. Modern 1200w or 1500 has been discussed on other threads and is closer to the period orig. 600w.
