Best wishes for a complete and speedy recovery, Karl. I still have good hips and knees, at 93. Thank the Lord.

Best wished Karl, and as others have said, the therapy is most important now.
For those who are now a candidate, be aware that there comes a time when you are no longer a candidate for surgery.

Sadly true. My father in law learned this the hard way. If you need it, do it. No reason to be in pain or to let this limit your life.

Try and get off the heavy hitter meds as soon as you can - makes for a quicker recovery for guys like us here who stay busy! Good luck and keep us posted!

B-O-B, I know you're joking, but to clarify for those who don't, Arthroplasty is a very common operation these days, methods perfected over many years, having successful results normally expected to be permanent. That said, insurance companies do require patients to sign consent forms for good reason.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

For those who are contemplating knee replacements---
The cortisone injections help until they don't. I used to ask my doctor "How will I know it is time for the surgery instead of the injections?". His reply--"You body will tell you"
I had both knees done at the same time--10 years ago. Here are my thoughts--
If both knees need replacement, do them at the same time--
---Unlike Spinal Tap, there is no "11" on the pain scale.
--- Commit to doing ALL the therapy or don't have the surgery.
---Plan on being the over achiever when it comes to PT--whatever the exercise and the number of reps or the time --do a little more.
---Get off the really heavy duty pain meds ASAP---I really mean as soon as POSIIBLE--use them --don't subject yourself to pain for no reason, but then get off them. My career was spent in Soils and Foundation Engineering as a field and lab technician; not an professional Engineer, but, over the tears i had experienced a lot, learned a lot and retained most of it. After my knee replacements, i was back at work, still taking the Oxy--whatever, and the Engineer asked a obscure technical question, and I KNEW the answer--but I couldn't "access" it right then. I quit the Oxy--whatever, immediately. The risk was just too great.
Get well soon!

Excellent advice.

Hope you get mobile and healthy soon Karl.

Hey Karl - hope you have a great outcome and that you follow all the PT recommendations as they are key to success. I'm looking forward to seeing you back on the Barn.

My wife has had both of hers done (at the same time) and one revision. Doesn’t do well with the drugs but did well with ice, ice and more ice. Best of luck and a speedy recovery.

This ain't no joke Alan. I asked the doctor what life span of these titanium knees were & he said roughly 15 years. He also stated that he was in on the development of this series knee replacement. R I P doc. I haven't babied mine either with working on old Fords & Mercury's & climbing some pretty good mtn's hunting. Legs are giving out but the knee's keep on bending.

Update: Third day after surgery. Pain level very tolerable, been able to avoid taking narcotics. Able (and encouraged) to walk with a walker. The at home regimen recommended (walk, exercises, ice pack) takes about 30-35 minutes ever hour.

Within that free window (when I don't care to take a nap) I will be able to take phone calls, work on a couple of V8 related 3D models, and (yech) administrative stuff.

Portland Swap Meet is still questionable, my pain level on the NON surgery knee is now often worse then the knee with fresh surgery so my mobility this year may still be limited.

Thanks for all your support!

It sounds like things went as well as could be expected. That's great! It seems like you have everything under control, so I'll just offer my wishes for a speedy recovery (and maybe a trip to that swap meet).

Karl you'll get along fine, no need to worry! I had the left one done in early August of this year, and was driving the '36 PU with ease in 5 weeks probably could have done it in four! I'm 70, had been delaying it for about 7 years finally said enough is enough..

Yes PT PT PT that is the trick don't slack off on that....The more you do early the faster you recover....

Karl - Best of luck and a speedy recovery. Like others have said, Physical Therapy is a must!
I'm likely to have my right knee (sports injury) done in the next year so I'm right behind you.

Replacement 12/3/2024 and driving 12/27/2024. All restrictions lifted 12/30/2024. At 81 years old, ya I may be bragging a bit, but I am tickled to death.
