Default 1941 Ford Super Deluxe Radio Antenna Beneath Car

Good evening, gentleman.

I recently pulled the radio out of my 1941 Super Deluxe to pull it apart and see how it looked. All the components seem to be original. I don't know whether I'll try to replace all of the capacitors and other related components, but in looking at tackling this project, it made me curious about the antenna. I noticed shortly after I first bought the car that the antenna (definitely not stock) is attached to the frame beneath the driver side door - it's an extremely long antenna, with a spring base. My question is: where would the original antenna be? There isn't a spot for it on the roof nor the fenders, so I'm curious where it would have been. Was it ever common to put radio antennas beneath the car?

The stock antenna with a factory installed radio is a roof style antenna. I think you may have an aftermarket radio.

Radio appears to be stock, however the antenna wiring was routed underneath the car. Just curious why there isn't a place on the car for a stock antenna.

My '41 Mercury has a delete plate on the dash and no antenna hole on the body.

One of the aftermarket solutions in '46 used a cowl mount like mine.

41s with factory radio had the antenna go through the roof centered in the middle of the dash . You could adjust its while driving.
2 41s I’ve owned, had the cowl mounted antenna and one recently purchased 41 had the normal 60s style, a hole through the top passenger side cowl .

The threaded connection on the top of the radio is the antenna connection. The antenna connects through the top of the dashboard and feeds to the top of the windshield frame on the inside. The antenna mounts on a swivel on the outside centre of the windscreen at the top.

Here is how the original antenna was supposed to be fitted.

41SupDelux,sounds like the antenna u speak of is possibly a cb whip antenna.possibly one of the car owners didn't want to drill the body to install a correct antenna. possibly that whip did bring a very close radio station that only mattered. Tom.

Here’s how I shortened mine, but the installation is still in the original location.
