I did a search and found lots of different opinions on painting the floor boards. My car will never be judged but I do not want bare plywood either, so it will be painted black, since I have a reproduction rubber floor mat, it will not show anyway.

Yep, nothing wrong with painting black with a good enamel. Helps keep moisture/rain from doing its dirty-work.

There could be many suggestions on this topic. In the past I have used 2 coats of Ebony Stain and three coats of spar varnish (sanded between coats). While you are at it why not add a heat baffle to the underside of the floor board to keep the exhaust pipe heat out of the car. My heat baffle is a small sheet of aluminum from Home Depot and 1 in. stand offs to provide an air space between the aluminum sheet and the plywood. Have fun with it. Ed

Used engine oil works great and offers the added bonus as a air freshener.

Originals were treated with a black preservative. I don't think I ever saw this anywhere, but I think a common preservative back then was creosote.

Arentino - Before coating the floorboards with used crankcase oil should I add some Marvel Mystery Oil? If so, how much?

I've wondered about using some of the newer heat reflective coatings.

Used engine oil always contains PCBs and is therefore carcinogenic!

Crude oil is still used on roads but in asphalt. Go figure.

I used Minwax, stain, True Black. It allows the grain to show, simulating the original look.

A little late on the uptake, but I too do a black wood stain followed by clear top coat.

Minwax Spanish Brown and top coated with spray Helmsman Spar Varnish. Spanish Brown is basically black. Came out nice.
