painting floorboard

I did a search and found lots of different opinions on painting the floor boards. My car will never be judged but I do not want bare plywood either, so it will be painted black, since I have a reproduction rubber floor mat, it will not show anyway.

Yep, nothing wrong with painting black with a good enamel. Helps keep moisture/rain from doing its dirty-work.

There could be many suggestions on this topic. In the past I have used 2 coats of Ebony Stain and three coats of spar varnish (sanded between coats). While you are at it why not add a heat baffle to the underside of the floor board to keep the exhaust pipe heat out of the car. My heat baffle is a small sheet of aluminum from Home Depot and 1 in. stand offs to provide an air space between the aluminum sheet and the plywood. Have fun with it. Ed

Used engine oil works great and offers the added bonus as a air freshener.

Originals were treated with a black preservative. I don't think I ever saw this anywhere, but I think a common preservative back then was creosote.

I think it was called Gilsonite which is a asphaltum product
Not sure floorboards were treated with that …..just painted

Arentino - Before coating the floorboards with used crankcase oil should I add some Marvel Mystery Oil? If so, how much?

I've wondered about using some of the newer heat reflective coatings.

Sorry but used motor oil is not an “air freshener “ to me.
U must have some really bad stench in your car!!
Cadaver left there a few weeks?!!

Used engine oil always contains PCBs and is therefore carcinogenic!

Re: painting floorboard

Well they used to put waste oil on dirt roads…..before EPA
Does that count??

Re: painting floorboard

Crude oil is still used on roads but in asphalt. Go figure.

Interesting.... I did all of that with mine! Exactly.

I used Minwax, stain, True Black. It allows the grain to show, simulating the original look.

Re: painting floorboard

Ditto recommending Minwax...
Stain is best approach.
"Wood Hates Paint"!

A little late on the uptake, but I too do a black wood stain followed by clear top coat.

Re: painting floorboard

Minwax Spanish Brown and top coated with spray Helmsman Spar Varnish. Spanish Brown is basically black. Came out nice.

Use marine board, and a sealing stain of your choice...done and done
