Those don't look like the side gear thrust washers used in the Dana 41 & 44. What rear axle does this pickup have in it?
The axles in the Dana 41/44 are 19-spline types and are held in place in the housing with the locked on bearings bolted in with side plates. The axles don't normally move around since they a splined into the side gears in the differential carrier case. Only the side gears have the 8M-4228 thrust washers and they are pretty large washers by comparison to the photos. They certainly don't look like those in the photos. |

Here is the complete list of parts for 48-50 F-1's. It would be a Dana 41 unless someone has changed it out.

This is a rear axle from a 1951 F1, axle shaft broke... when openning the rear axle in order to change the shaft, the washers were there, next to the locker unit...

Here is a 1948-52 axle from Van Pelt's site. I only see two washers 8M-4230 3/4" ID 1 21/32" OD and 8M-4228 1 41/64" ID 2 13/16 OD.

They do look like thrust blocks for a D44 Detroit Locker. They are available from several sources for around $25. A lot of lockers are for the later 30 spline axles. Last edited by rotorwrench; 08-31-2022 at 03:15 PM. |
