Yesterday I went on a club tour and the car never ran better. But, I came home with another dress shirt that has grease on the left shoulder from the female dovetail on the door jam. I don't realize it when it happens but to get my feet through the opening, I must be leaning back into the greasy slot in the dovetail. Has anyone else experienced this? When I am stepping out, going on a tour or a club meeting, I usually am wearing one of my better shirts.
Can anyone recommend a clear, heavy grease or other lubricant? Currently, I am using a heavy black wheel bearing grease. Thanks for your help. Ed |

I see your problem although I haven't had it yet. I wonder if a clear piece of tape on the face of dovetail might work. Better yet, a piece of clear plastic sheet covering the entire face and secured with the dovetail's mounting screws.

Someone gave me a duster, which is basically an overcoat to be worn while driving your pre WWW1 brass car on the dusty roads of the time. That may be a solution. You can put it on to drive the car and then take it off when you get to your destination. An old jacket would serve the same purpose. A light weight jacket for summer or Florida.

Take the shirt off before you get in the car.

I noticed a hole on either side of the four dovetails on my Town Sedan and inside the dovetail has a piece of felt (the dovetails are hollow). Occasionally I wipe them clean and put a few drops of light oil in the holes. I don't know if this was what the holes and felt were originally meant for but it appears to be and seems to work. I wonder if those holes would be for rubber bumpers?

Silicon spray is better for door locks here, dust doesn't stick and wear them out. Spray often. It dries clear.
Wash out the grease first tho. |

Originally the dovetails had felt inserts. The holes are to allow oiling not greasing I would suppose

I would say if everything else that could go wrong isn't, this is the least of your worries.
