I am assembling a 1940 banjo from parts I have collected. Just found this ring gear carrier, but it looks different than others I have seen.
Can someone ID what year it is from? Thanks, Dave |

With the size of the photo, it's hard to tell. They made the same basic assembly from 1932 through 1948 but there may be variations in appearance. The main thing is that they have the same dimensions for the bearing, bolt pattern, and overall length from the ring gear attach face to the lip on the bearing journal where the bearing seats.
The ones I have, have number casting marks like 18 in one spot and 4206 on another in between the special bolt heads. There is also a foundry mark on there too. The part numbers for the two halves were 18-4205 and 18-4206. If it has a B then it would likely be the model A/B type part with the B prefixes if made after the start of model B production. |

Looks like the typical 1940 to 1948 carrier assembly. The earlier carrier hub diameter the long round area where the bearing is located at the end is a smaller diameter outside its noticeable just by looking at the two assembly's. Then there's the 1932 carrier which is completely different.

Thanks Rotorwrench! Very helpful. Good to know they all have the same bolt pattern and dimensions. I will check the casting marks and see what it has.
