Default Split intake

I pulled my car out of the basement yesterday to get it ready for some upcoming shows. I popped the hood and this is what I found.
Should I be concerned or is this just a failed 70 year old intake. it is a early intake on a 8ba.

Thank you.

My question would be what caused it?
Intakes don't just crack from sitting, did you notice any performance issues before you put it away in storage?

Ralph asked a good question. Seems odd that it would crack like that.
Wonder if intake was "over torqued"?
Remove the intake. Drill a 3/16 in hole at the end of each crack.
"V" the cracks with a steel cutting tool, not a grinding wheel.
TIG weld the cracks, grind smooth, finish and polish.
As a last resort JB Weld would also work.

It's been several months since I last drove it. I have started it a couple times since parked. I did notice the last time I started it felt like it was loading up a little.
Anybody know what that center port on the intake is for?

Some of the manifolds in around the 1935/36 time frame (aluminum) were kind of thin in the area that was heated by exhaust. I don't know what year that one is but it damn sure cracked out. Did it have pennies in the ports?

Just a thought, but it looks like a water feeze crack. But if I'm not mistaken that is the heat cross over area. So is the heat cross over plugged? Starting and not fully warming it up caused a condition for water to build up and freeze?

Basement is climate controlled. No chance of freezing.

That crack is the result of heat from the exhaust crossover. The aluminum was on the verge of melting. Excess heat is caused by retarded timing or a lean fuel mixture. If you have the original vacuum only Load-O-Matic distributor, the diaphragm may be blown. If the carb is not original, the Load-O-Matic will not give the right advance.

OK. Unless the advance mechanism is gummed up, timing is probably not the issue. Might just be thin in that area. The exhaust crossover passage is to heat the carb base to prevent icing up. Due to the pressure drop across the carb venturii, internal carb temperature can drop below freezing, and moisture in the air condenses and freezes inside the carb.

Heat stress crack from crossover. If it were me and I just wanted to drive it, I would smear heat resistant epoxy into the crack until I could replace it.

It is possible that there may be cracks into the intake ports, but I doubt it. There are no water jackets so if there is a leak you would see it on the plugs after a while but I wouldn't be concerned about anything else other than cosmetics.

Pulled the intake off last night. The heat ports where blocked with off with cuts of tin. Opposite side of crack the tin only covered 3/4 of the hole.

What the? Is that sand/ dirt/ or exhaust rust?
I'm wondering if whoever blocked it off put that in there to dissipate heat?

Block off plates between intake and gasket. The plate on opposite side of crack did not come.pletely cover hole.

Boy, that would be enough for me to tear the engine down and see what else is going on inside.

Wow - looks like casting sand to me....
How much dumped into the valley when you took the manifold off?
The cracks can be welded up.
Contact Mike Kuhn - www.kuhnsautospecialties.com
He is one of the few I know that can weld two gumwrappers together and he's really quite reasonable. Also a Barner here...

Nice Thanks! Lots of casting sand came out of the intake. I think the engine didn't take any. I am going to change the oil and check it
