Default trying to decide.....

ok trying to decide what way to go with a distributor. stock 31 A motor, in my lil speedster, its time to decide what and or if to upgrade the ignition. only reason I want to do this is so the kids can drive it without fear of the wrong settings hurting things. I am going to go with a 12v alternator kit, but not sure which would be the best distributor to go with. any help appreciated

This may help you decide. I put an electronic ignition in my speedster when I first completed it. After coming home on a roll back with a failed igniter I put a stock distributor on and have roared away trouble free for years and 1,000 of miles. I know this will bring about the electronic ignition defenders, but this is just my experience.

If a stock ignition system works perfectly..........can any change really be an "upgrade"?

Beater,
If "everyone's" going to be driving it, just put in a simple Mallory, single point distributor & not worry.

If they know how to drive you could teach them how to correctly use the spark advance.

well with my experiances with petronix and the like im pretty sure ill be sticking with points/ condenser, but really would like to not have to worry about the advance. gona be fun enough to learn about the clutch and square cut gears.

is the Mallory still available? ive seen the fellow from Oklahoma that sells the upgraded distributors to. think im going to go with the nurex alt, or build my own

Mike,
I tried...my wife just cannot keep it straight. I cannot let her drive the car unless I install a self advancing distributor. I do all the driving.

I get the "Give a man a fish thing"...but it doesn't apply to my wife.

Give my wife a cleaned fish, maybe I'll eat it today; try to teach her to clean a fish, I'll never eat another in a lifetime.

Good Day!

Nu-Rex makes a centrifugal advance that fits in your valve chamber and when set up correctly, works well. It will work with your original distributor. Snyder's has them in their 2016 Catalog for $185.00

X 2 on post #3.
Ours failed on G.R. Rally in remote Nebraska. Had about 3K miles on it. It decided not to work. Original distributor under the seat and about 10 minutes and we were on our way.

And what day did the NuRex whirligig fail? (or I guess I could just read all the 71 pages!)

It failed in the first few days of the trip. I do not recall which one. It is a very interesting log of their travels.

I'll have to read thru it at home later. I could only open about a 4th of the pages and none of the pictures here at work.
