Last picture is of the right rear wheel, front of car is to the right. This wheel turns clock wise when going forward. When brakes are applied, the wheel cylinder applies a force onto the shoe pushing it toward the drum. The rotating drum will pull the shoe with it forcing it into the anchor at the bottom. This will push the shoe even more into the drum. That's a self energizing action and to get the most effect, the front shoe should have the longer lining. The rear shoe is rotated up and into the wheel cylinder and it won't do much work. There's no force applied to the bottom of the shoe. That should be the shoe with the short lining.

Ford folks,
As we get some better weather, John and I are starting to get our cars out.
John brought "Howard" up for a oil change. Here is a walk around as the 46 is on the lift in the shop.

Regards,
Chris and Cheryl

I would agree! looks as if it just drove out of 1946 and arrived here, into the year 2025!

Chris,

I'm not seeing photos on any of your posts, and I am logged into the Ford Barn. Did you change photo hosting services? Are others seeing Chris's photos?

Pictures coming thru fine. That was a NOS gauge, but you never know until it's installed. Every indication I had was it was charging good, but the amp meter was dead. I'm not a perfectionist but I like anything mechanical to work.

Thanks, Not seeing pictures must be something with the computer I was using. I tried logging out and back in and still no photos. I tried another computer and I see them on that machine.

Doing a great job, looking good.

What bulbs are you using in the dash instruments? Supplier and P/N would be appreciated.

I think they are just a regular # 55 bulbs that I got from NAPA. Chris also gave me a couple of boxes of Tung Sol brand bulbs, and I may have used a few of them.

Thank you for your reply. They seem to be a lot brighter than the 55’s I have in my’46 Super Deluxe, and yes, I have the dimmer turned to brightest.

51woodie, I installed a new NAPA voltage regulator and was getting a reading of 6.4-6.6 volts at the battery. Lights were weak. Grabbed the old regulator which was date stamped from 1963 and put it back on. Lights were bright and at RPM well into the 7-volt range. when I get time, I'll have my starter guy set the NAPA one to at least 7.2 volts. The one on the car was new in the box when I sold the car to my father-in-law back in 1991.I wonder if the quality of electrical parts has gone downhill over the years.

Just a thought. One thing I found out while restoring the instrument cluster was the poor condition of the housing where light reflects.

In my case the white paint wasn't white anymore and it was flaking off. So I removed the old paint and sprayed it with a fresh coat of white paint. Also, after replacing all lightbulbs, the cluster illuminated as new. The fresh paint made a huge difference.

Conrad,
Your explanation of dim lighting makes sense, as I’m sure the surfaces and finish inside the instruments have deteriorated over the past 79 years. As much as I would like to pull the instrument cluster and refurbish it, my 75 year old brain says leave things alone!

If the tires on it now were purchased in 1984 I would NOT trust them. A friend of mine completely lost a 40 coupe due to old tires. There are 4 pictures of the fire caused by the blowout of the LR tire in my MISC album.

deuce_roadster, the tires were replaced last year. The old ones were cracked and dry rotted.

Jim,
I am using "post image" storage system. I have changed storage systems a couple times but have had good luck with this storage system. I hope you can figure out what the problem is.
Regards,
Chris and Cheryl

I found this spare tire lock on Ebay. The seller said it's for a 1946 Ford. Can anybody identify what year this is for? It was $18 so I figured I'd take a chance and the lock mechanism works.

Usually installed on the external spare tire on station wagons.

Also used on those cars and pickups with side mount spares.
