Default distrib. install

Hi, I got a re-worked delco from Bubba and I had the vacuum advance added.
Anyway, the vacuum thing on the stock dist is on the top right and on this one is the bottom left. with plug wire for the 1st cyl at 6 o'clock. I haven't tried it yet for fitment, i'm sure it'll be ok unless one of you waves a red flag. I'm a little afraid it'll interfere with the coil.
Confession time, I've never done this before. I have got the rotor pointed at No. 1 with the dot and pointer lined up. I guess now I need to mark the original at the block and then get the new dist. in exactly the same position.
I've read what I could on this and still have questions. Any pointers out there?
Thanks Much. meanwhile I'll get into the instructions again.

Bill

i presume you are talking about an 8ba, you can move coil to inner fender panel. or where ever you want it. also, you can put #1 whever you want it, mine is at 11 oclock. keep in mind you are limited to the hold down pad on the distributor. (if it has one) if not, you can put it to where you have the clearence you need. i hope this makes sense, i could show you better that tell you.

the more i look at it the better sense it makes yeah, 8ba. I think I get it, I just need to make sure the rotor is at whatever I have wired to no 1. as that is where I started with the old dist. then time it to fit. thanks.ole39

Just be sure you use manifold vacuum, NOT from the fitting on the carburetor. They are not the same thing, and your distributor won't work right with anything but manifold vacuum.

Cecil,
bk is referring to a GM Chevy dist converted to run in an 8BA. In this case
the correct and only source is manifold not venturri.

got it, thanks. I'm up and running on manifold vac. gotta replace plug wires and get to tuning. I guess it ships with zero advance. plug wires pulled apart on me and she is running rough. no backfires so... on with the fun.

I used a rubber elbow on the vacuum advance & a plastic tee at the manifold wiper hose. I removed the coil bracket and bent it slightly in my vise. I used the stock 8BA plug wires.

Here's another approach.

Looks familiar! my belt (f100) is actually much closer. I disconnected the coil and put it back after the install. The rubber vacuum elbow looks like a good idea. what steps did you go thru to tune it up? For instance can I skip setting the points? I'm interested in anything you have to say about it.

PS nice looking ride in your avatar.

Thanks,

Bill

Well, it runs great! noticeable increase in power and better gas mileage.
as far as setting it up Richard In Florida was very helpful with his instructions. point dwell is about 30*, max mech. advance 18-20* + add 6-8*vac. advance.

Richard has a nice pdf on this, give him a p.m.

Default Typo in "Adjusting Your GM Flathead Distributor"

Thanks for the nice words. Oddly enough, today I noticed a typo on page three!

Second paragraph. First sentence, beginning "As you can see,".

It should read, "As you can see, with the Maximum Engine Advance set at
20°, the minimum amount of advance your engine will see, when at idle, is –5°. Not good."

It erroneously said "25°" in that sentence.

Shouldnt need to adjust the contacts for many miles . They are set at 30 degrees, lubed really well with high temp greas and ran on a machine for quite a few minutes.
Glad to see ya got it up and running......
Any of you guys with questions feel free to call 317-487-9460......glad to help.

I am curious as to why you say to use manifold vac. instead of ported vac. on a chev. dist. the chev. point dist.'s that I am familiar with, ( and early H.E.I.) used ported vac. if I remember correctly. I could be wrong. is it because of the type of carb. you are using? could you please expain this to me. sorry I am not understanding this. must be a sign that I am getting older.

The Ford carb does not have a ported spark signal. It taps into the venturi and does not give a strong signal and does not correspond to manifold vacuum.
