Can anyone recommend a 239 flathead pilot and seat cutter? I've heard new way is good? Just planning on a valve job using the old seats.

I have the new way cutters, they are very nice and easy to use, do a great job .
I have a special pilot the engages with the valve guide bore as well as the lifter bore.

Lawrie,

Is the "special pilot" a Neway product or something special from another source? I have been looking at these for a while.

Hey Lawrie, was curious of the diameter of the pilot you have? I have both a Sioux and a Kwikway pilot (for their standard seat holders) - was wondering if they would work with the Neway stuff?

I used a Neway Cutter on a recent build. I kept everything scrupulously clean and it seemed to work out well.

FWIW, I used:
CU616 30/45deg valve seat cutter
Pilot tool PEM150-8.5mm
Wrench TW505.

The pilot I have is not Neway and works just fine. Same one I used when I used to use stones. Sioux

Isn't a Sioux pilot .385 in diameter?

What are you guys seeing as far as the quality of the seat finish and concentricity? Anybody use a seat mic afterwards to see if there is any run-out?

I'm used to stones where you have a really nice concentric and almost polished seat. I'd love to see some close-up pictures if any of you have them. I might be able to use my Kwik-Way Seat cutting setup with one of these Neway cutters to do the seat work (depending on the quality of the finish and concentricity).

pilot is .375 top diameter is 1.032 bottom dia 1.000

I have the exact same Lawrie and also my Made in Australia Warren Brown Syncro seater set I bought over from home to the US with me. I love it and have tried the Cutters mentioned above but in my opinion the stones do a much better job and more concentric seat. I have even gone head to head with the salesman of the cutters and embarrassed him.
Stones B&S (Dale) are my preference even if they are slower.
Lawrie I sure wish I could bring my Dad’s Wolf valve refacer over also as I believe it is as good as it gets.

I have a Hall eccentric seat grinder . Does a fantastic job but slow.

This is my .375 B&D with extraction handle. I used this pilot without the handle on two valve jobs and it could be a pain wringing it back out. Last year when I bought my lathe in Seattle the guy had a bunch of 'outdated' automotve gear and asked if I wanted any of it. There was a Sioux seat grinder and a Sioux setup for counterboring the block for hard seats. In the seat grinder kit was this snap-lock handle for my B&D and of course it fit nothing in the Sioux kit. Just my lucky day.
