On an old Ames unit I found in a trash dump years ago, the armature is rebuildable but the commutator literally came apart. They likely used a fibrous material to attach the copper segments to and whatever it was turned to dust. The segments are still good but I figure to try a micarta bushing if I ever get around to trying a repair on it. I'd use a high temp epoxy adhesive to hold it all together. There was a thread on here not long ago that has information about rebuilders that can rewind the armatures.
