I have the dark grey ,almost black, repro, outer rear hub gaskets which seem like a real hard fiber material. When in the hub, it stands proud by .040". I can't imagine that when I torque the axle nut to a 100 foot pounds this hard gasket will compress .040" to be flush with the outer hub surface. Or will it? I wouldn't want the nut washer to be sitting only on the fiber gasket. I'd feel better if the steel washer is loaded against the hub. I wonder if a garden hose gasket or an o-ring would be better. Have any of you guys tried this repro gasket with success? Will it really compress that much?

according to brattons catalog the the nut rests against the steel washers and the hub,not against the fiber washer, page #30 Brattons catalog.

rocket1, you are correct the nut goes against the steel washer. I never said the nut goes against the fiber.

I came across the same problem with the fiber axle seals with my Double A, it was obvious that clamped between a hard steel washer and the drum that it will work loose, somehow the vendor has the wrong specs, I sent mine back for a full refund, if your concerned add an O-Ring or some felt packing in the recess..

Same deal here in Maine. I've never had a problem with those gaskets not compressing but I will keep this in mind. There is no end to the sneaky issues that come up!
