Rear wheel drum hub gaskets.... Update I have the dark grey ,almost black, repro, outer rear hub gaskets which seem like a real hard fiber material. When in the hub, it stands proud by .040". I can't imagine that when I torque the axle nut to a 100 foot pounds this hard gasket will compress .040" to be flush with the outer hub surface. Or will it? I wouldn't want the nut washer to be sitting only on the fiber gasket. I'd feel better if the steel washer is loaded against the hub. I wonder if a garden hose gasket or an o-ring would be better. Have any of you guys tried this repro gasket with success? Will it really compress that much?

Re: Rear wheel drum hub gaskets according to brattons catalog the the nut rests against the steel washers and the hub,not against the fiber washer, page #30 Brattons catalog.

Re: Rear wheel drum hub gaskets should be fine , & will compress, try it & see, Like hitting your finger with a hammer , if it does not squash find a bigger hammer .

Re: Rear wheel drum hub gaskets rocket1, you are correct the nut goes against the steel washer. I never said the nut goes against the fiber.

Re: Rear wheel drum hub gaskets I came across the same problem with the fiber axle seals with my Double A, it was obvious that clamped between a hard steel washer and the drum that it will work loose, somehow the vendor has the wrong specs, I sent mine back for a full refund, if your concerned add an O-Ring or some felt packing in the recess..

Re: Rear wheel drum hub gaskets.... Update I cleaned the tapers with lacquer thinner, assemble and torqued axle nut to 100 foot pounds. The gasket compressed but not enough. I was able to fit a .012 feeler gauge between the steel washer and the hub. I took a new gasket (same repro) and sanded off .015. It was still proud of the hub surface when I stuck it in. I then torque nut to 100 foot pounds and the steel washer came home on to the hub surface. I would think if not corrected, the nut would have loosened with the potential of wrecked tapers. Folks, keep your nuts tight.

Re: Rear wheel drum hub gaskets.... Update Same deal here in Maine. I've never had a problem with those gaskets not compressing but I will keep this in mind. There is no end to the sneaky issues that come up!
