Default Fake 'R' code Galaxie?

Saw an 'R' code Galaxie on BringATrailer. The trim tag has been mounted with new rivets on the door and not the door frame. The VIN tab under the hood looks like it's been welded on upside down. Never seen one like that; I've always seen the numbers right-side-up when viewed from the bumper, not right-side-up when viewed from the front door between the cowl and the hood.

Seen a lot of suspicious VIN's lately on desirable vehicles. Maybe my standards are too high and there's just a lot of variability in manufacturing.

Thoughts?

When I see that kind of stuff I expect the worst case scenario.

I did look up some other '64 Galaxies and it seems that the location of the trim tag and orientation of the VIN tag changed to what what's shown in the pictures. This actually COULD actually be correct and authentic. I haven't accused anyone of anything but certainly when a single letter in a VIN code means up to a 100% price difference or tens of thousands of dollars, I'm always suspicious.

Frankly I'd rather have a car with an acknowledged engine swap to clone a more expensive option than pay really big bucks for one character in some flimsy pieces of metal.

For some reason it can be tough to get anyone to tell you (closely) where the numbers can be validated on the frame. In my state an out of state title or bill of sale requires a VIN inspection. If there is any reason to explore further, they send you to the State Highway Patrol, and they have a shop that can even determine if a fender has been replaced. You can wind up with your car confiscated, and out all your money.

I have a 57 Ford, and my tag is on the door too. The new rivits...that paint looks pretty good, so maybe it was simply removed for painting.

If one has to actually know and willing to chase it down, I would start here -

https://www.fordfe.com/

EDIT -

The participants in the above MESSAGE BOARD know the FE front to back. There has to be someone there that can either answer the question or point you in the right direction.

There was a 427 GALAXIE REGISTRY but I cannot come across it now. Maybe FACEBOOK?

There is a lot of fraud going on and even some sneak by outfits like MECUM.

EDIT - (YES, ANOTHER) -

Discussion of 63 1/2 GALAXIE ID STAMPING(S) -

https://www.fordfe.com/63-5-galaxie-...ns-t99056.html

I’ve got a friend who’s been into Corvettes and early Camaros for years. There’s a whole industry of guys out there providing parts to fake them, and another whole industry of guys who specialize in catching them. Makes me laugh when it’s an alternator or a starter with “matching numbers”

I had a 63 1/2 500XL Galaxie 352 Cruisomatic, the vin number stamped on the tab on the RHS cowl, had been xxxx out and replaced with the new number, the xxxx out number indicated a 390, this was done on the production line.
Car was an LA car, from memory Reseda CA

Not far from us is a fellow that has a 1964 Galaxie convertible with a 427. His Dad ordered a new 64 Galaxie 427 convertible here and after a number of years it rusted out. He bought another Galaxie convertible and put the 427 in it. I think he still has the "hulk" of the original car. Haven't seen it but everyone tells me it's not repairable. Kind of a dilemma of what you do there. He is an honest guy but there's a possibility the next owner may not be.

I had a '64 Z code (390) Galaxie, the tag was on the door and the body stamped VIN was like your picture.
Most likely the door tag in the photo had been removed when the door was repainted. It looks like the guy used the right rivets when he reinstalled the tag.
What was the asking price for the car?

It's a no-reserve auction on bringatrailer.com. Someone's going to buy it. Unless it's a real steal, I'll probably pass. I'd have just as much fun, if not more, with a 390-powered Galaxie for a few $10,000 less.

Is the vin stamped on the frame rail in front of the right side front body mount on 64s as it is on 57s?

From what I've read and seen, '62 was the last year for the VIN stamped into the frame

This Custom 2-door Sedan R-code is by far the rarest of the 1964 (factory produced) 427/4spd cars, w/less than 15 built. 1964 R-code Galaxies – hundreds built. 1964 Galaxie “Lightweight” – 100 built.
The BUBBLE HOOD was only used on the 427HR, not LR. The LOW RISER was released for street driven cars and the 427 HI-RISER for race. And there is no provision for FRONTAL AIR. Is it a true 427 car or is it a counterfeit?
