Blowing Starter Safety Fuse Help Please
Any help would be much appreciated.
I’m working on a 30 Tudor All stock. I have installed a tested generator and Cutout. When I hook the battery cable up, The generator cutout immediately closes the points And since the vehicle isn’t running or ignition on, It blows the safety fuse. So basically it’s trying to motor the generator while everything is off. Now if I attach the cutout without the 2 little screws on the generator body It all works. All I can think of is something off the harness from the coil and starter side is Has power when it touches the batt connection on the cutout top. |

Almost sound like you have the cutout installed backwards.

Re: Blowing Starter Safety Fuse Help Please
I’m not sure about the cutout itself. I’m assuming it’s positive ground.
I don’t know if they made them another way |

. . Maybe one of the small screws that mounts the cutout, is TOO long and is shorting one of the field coil wires. Last edited by Benson; 02-27-2024 at 10:34 PM. |

Re: Blowing Starter Safety Fuse Help Please
Here is photo of what Gary WA is referring to>>>
Square part keeps washer in place and prevents shorts to the case cover. Square part also centers the cover so the screw does not short on cover. Photo from Berts website: www.modelastore.com A-10563 GENERATOR CUTOUT INSULATORS- SET OF 2 Last edited by Benson; 03-01-2024 at 08:57 PM. |

Re: Blowing Starter Safety Fuse Help Please
Ok now I understand. So I’m basically putting 6 volts to the case of the cutout.
Is that why I’m burning fuses? Thank you |

Re: Blowing Starter Safety Fuse Help Please
Its the wrong cutout, its backwards and missing the proper insulators. I rebuild generators and refurbish original cutouts. I can provide you with a correct cutout. PM me if interested.

Re: Blowing Starter Safety Fuse Help Please
ndnchf is correct. The battery closes the points and connects it to the generator (motor), which blows the fuse.
Question is, where did that generator case come from. Looks like you need to drill and tap new mounting holes. (Careful of the field windings.) |

Re: Blowing Starter Safety Fuse Help Please
That’s a later generator that style just had 2 wires coming out of a grommet instead of the threaded post one for power out, the other is field ground or attached to the oval cutout.
That style reproduction cutout usually has burned up contacts or melted solder where the winding connects. Turn the cutout around and make a short wire to connect it. |
