Default 28 AR starter switch

I have posted here about my struggles to get all the pieces to get my 1/2 shaft star teepee back in my E28 sport coupe after a bendix failure. I like all of the quirks of the AR model A's and the unusual starter switch is one. The copper triangular contact button on the starter is unique to those starters and is necessary to make the early switch work. After comparing a later starter case to E28 case I found that the early switch would work on a later starter. Guess what, no one makes the early 28 copper contact button. I ordered a standard field contact button and silver soldered a block of copper on top being careful to get properly aligned with the slot where the field coils solder in place. A machinist friend measured the dimensions of the E28 contact button and copied it for me. Now I just need to assemble and give it a whirl!

Nice work.

I use my WEN 250 soldering gun to solder the field coils.

I had him make me two of them. I'm going to build up a second starter as a spare.

Finished my E28 starter conversion. Worked great, 5/8 inch shaft starter with the E28 switch.

Is this starter going in a car with a multi disk clutch? If so how will the bendix spring clear? Bob

No it has a standard A clutch. It has been fun doing this, I needed to I try my hand at a starter rebuild any way. I think I will sell the original 1/2 inch shaft starter so someone doing a high points resto can use it. I spent a fair amount of time rounding up bendix parts for it, but oh well.

Does anyone make the bent starter foot rod for the early 28 starter? Bob

I see them at times on ebay, but I think someone also makes a repro of it. I don't know who though.
