I have made these before, they are the B-5098 bolts for the u/joint cap , I made these from an old Model A driveshaft.
I do this to fix up the loose bolts and housing to get the B-5413 u/joint cap back concentric. Lawrie |

had a higher carbon content or was case hardened? Hex bolts are a bear to tighten. Nice to have the right bolts. I see you have a U-Joint showing in your photo. How do you inspect a U-joint like that to see if it's still good and usable before installing it? Thanks, JIM |

I wish I had the time to make a few hundred of these. Fortunately today I just sent off a large load of the 5/8” across the flats slotted nuts that suit these |

Tim I was able to locate a quantity of them in Germany of all places. They arrived this week and I’ve sent them off for S-2 finish.
I was able at the same time to find some 5/8 af marsden nuts as well for those not wanting to fool with the cotter pins |

If you knew how long it takes an old toolmaker like me to make them it scare you.
But this time I made some fixtures to hold them in the mill when doing the head and took a lot less.also easy to do the matching on the lathe , 19 Fourdy, the driveshaft steel looks like its induction hardened to a depth of about 1/16, so it takes some getting through, then its just as tough as and lovely to machine, all with insert tools though. Because it centralises the bell on the torque tube and thus you have the U/joint pivot centre line on the same plane as the bell.
I found this was the main reason for a persistent vibration in our 33 that when the previous owner had it could never get rid of it, some on K/pars 33. Those four bolts are fitted bolts to the housing and bell for that reason. Lawrie |
