What's a hogsring? Supposedly it goes between the transmission and the engine. Is it just another name for bellhousing? and would it be different between a 6 and 8 cylinder flathead in 1948 F1?

If your flathead six is the 1941-47 G series, you have to use the gearbox case made for this motor. If you have the 1948-51 H series flathead six, you would need the stamped steel bell housing made just for this engine, and then bolt up the regular top loader or side loader 3 speed gearbox to it.

Where might I find the stamped steel bell housing for a 1948 6 cylinder. The 1939 3 speed has already been converted to open driveshaft, but it has the bell housing for a V8.

I'm really confused after looking at the 1939 3 speed again. The bellhousing is an integral part of the transmisson casing and can't be separated from the rest. So how can it be changed?

Maybe this will help. Here is a pic from the Green Bible. cas3 has your bellhousing. You can see the starter plate part number 7007. Your trans then should bolt up as Mac VP said.

For the Ford the entire bell housing is in a few pieces. Part that covers the rear of the pressure plate and contains the throwout bearing assembly is on the transmission and does not get changed. The cover for the side of the pressure plate and the flywheel and the back of the transmission is a separate piece that you need to change. That cover has yet another piece that mounts the starter motor see the diagram above, look for part numbers 6392 and 7007

Hog rings hold your upholstery on the seat frames.
Hogs head is the transmission bellhousing part. |

Thanks everybody, this flathead stuff is all new to me. Now give me a 1965 Mustang and I can take it apart and reassemble it blindfolded. With all this help, I am learning. It's just so different but still familiar in a small way.

the Hogs Head adapter is used to fit the truck 4-speed transmission to the bell-housing.
