These transmissions are a lot like the earlier Ford side & top shift transmissions except for the overdrive system. Intermediate gear or 2nd is the rear side of the two synchronized speed selections with the high 1 to 1 drive or 3rd being in the front. The 2nd gear pop out is usually a thrust surface wear indication. Clearances have to be to minimums to reduce the possibility of the 2nd gear synchro being forced out of mesh. I hope you rebuilder checks all the thrust surfaces well.
Tell your rebuilder than Mac VP has shaft snap rings that are much easier to remove and intall then OEM and they are the correct thickness to maintain correct internal clearances. He has a thrust washer kit for the cluster gear that a person can get proper clearances with. He makes an effort to get the best parts that are currently available. His transmission book for the old Ford units is the best reference I've yet found. It doesn't cover the overdrive but it's good for the gearbox. |
