mercruiser 470 crank in a engine

I was wondering if anyone had sized up a mercruiser 470 crank for potential fitment into an a engine. Thinking that if one is casting a block then sourcing a suitable inexpensive crank should be a consideration..
The merc 470 gets some bum reviews now a days, but I had the pleasure of working on a few of them 15 years ago and they had some pretty impressive power. They were pretty plentiful back in the day, and I bet there are still many out there to be had cheap.

is that a 151 GM engine,if so it will not work. The distance from number two and three cylinder is to great. The A needed more room because the dist. was between 3,4.

No, its much larger. it uses a 460 ford cylinder head on top of a cast aluminum block.

the 470 made 190 Hp and approximately 275 Lb-Ft of torque. It was 3.7 liters.
I am uncertain of the stroke, but they say the engine was half of a 460 ford...???

Stroke on a 460 motor is 3.85 and on the "A" motor it's 4.25. Nice looking crank in that Mercruser though

The Mercruiser 3.7 L 224 cubic inch engine is an inline 4-cylinder. It uses one cylinder head from the Ford 460 V8 and the same 4.36-inch bore as the 460. Stroke is 3.75 inches, which is shorter than the 3.85 inches of the Ford engine.

Im thinking that if you were to take the internals from this engine and cast a block to fit them into that dimensionally looked like an A engine you could produce one nice motor at a low cost. Would make an interesting project for when I retire LOL

I think 3.75 would be a good stroke. You could in crease the RPMS with out breaking a crank. If the length is right I would think it would work fine.

I thought the stroke on a Model A was 4-1/4" ?

I believe 3.875 is the bore.

3.75" isn't a bad stroke though...

This thread intrigued me since I have had 2 vehicles in my past with the 429/460 engine in them. I always thought that engine was a great engine. I just thought that of 1/2 of that engine in a Model A would be interesting.

He said those engines are cheap. It would be easer to put the engine in a model A, than putting the crank in the A engine. But sounds like it would be a nice project either way.

No, I was thinking of casting a 5 main block that would utilize the 470's internals IE crank, rods, bearing caps, ect. Was thinking it may be economical to do so??
