Guys, on your trans rebuild check list remember to inspect more than just the condition of gear teeth. The roller / needle bearing bores in the cluster
and main drive gear....very critical obviously....NOS measures 1.1255.... 1.126 I think anything over 1.129 is problematic. The pilot bearing dia on the main drive gear....I like .686 / .683. Often over looked ,I have discovered, is the thin wall bushing in second gear on the '39 up trans. After rebushing 2nd I fit it to its mainshaft with a light drag then run it in at 2100 rpm in my lathe. It ends up with an almost free spin but no rock at all. Charlie ny |

Hi Charlie, did you install the '49 Merc O/D transmission in the F-1? If so, I'd sure like to know what modifications you had to make to the frame, etc. Vic

This swap is a work in progress. The truck is at my customers shop waiting for winter doldrums (when his business falls off to zilch). I will forward info and photos to you as promised. The removable floor pan will help accessing things for sure. I purchased the firewall relay, cable and a few other no longer available goodies from Mac Van Pelt FYI. Charlie ny |

I installed a 49 Merc O/D in the tonner. It was a simple drop in swap. I fabricated a bolt in extension to the OEM X member that supported the OEM 4 speed trans. The extension supports the Merc transmission mount that's part of the tailshaft. The attached photos give you some idea of what's involved. As I recall all the trucks after WW2 used the ladder bar type frame like the tonner. The other thing you may have to do is shorten the driveshaft. Les Williams |

I've been looking for a Ford type, tin top, O/D transmission so I could see if I could convert it to a top loader and then put it in my 45 1/2 ton. I would be interested hearing about the conversion to top loading, especially what tower and forks are needed.
