I tried heating up the solder around the spinning drain plug threads, but it did not take. It did loosen the old drain plug and I was able to get it out. What kind of solder should I use to try and reseal the threads? Thanks

Regular solder is all that is needed The trick here is cleanliness of the metals to be soldered and good flux. It also could be brazed.

Use a good flux after cleaning all oil away and, if you can get it, 50/50 lead/tin solder. A plumbing supply house has it in 1# rolls and possibly smaller rolls. Tell them what you are using it for and never use it on your household plumbing system.

I just ran into this problem last weekend. I took the pan off and cleaned everything up really good and then TIG welded the thread insert back in. It won't ever come out again!!!
